The Complete Guide to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (2026)

Up to £7,500 available
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump, and £5,000 towards a biomass boiler. The scheme runs until 2028 — but grants are first-come, first-served.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant programme designed to help homeowners replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives. It's administered by Ofgem and funded until March 2028.
The grant is deducted directly from your installation invoice — you never handle the money yourself. Your MCS-certified installer (that's us) applies to Ofgem on your behalf before the installation takes place.
How much is the grant?
- Air source heat pump£7,500
- Ground source heat pump£7,500
- Biomass boiler£5,000
Who is eligible?
To qualify for the BUS grant, you need to meet the following criteria:
- Your property is in England, Scotland, or Wales
- You own the property (homeowners and landlords both qualify)
- You are replacing a fossil fuel heating system (gas, oil, or LPG)
- Your property has a valid EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)
- You have not previously received a BUS grant for this property
- The property is not a new build (new builds have separate requirements)
Do I need a good EPC rating?
No — the BUS grant has no minimum EPC rating requirement. Your property just needs to have a valid EPC on record. If you don't have one, getting one is straightforward and typically costs £60–£120. We can point you in the right direction.
How does the application process work?
As an MCS-certified installer, Adapt Renewables handles the entire application on your behalf. Here's how it works:
- We carry out a free survey and confirm your eligibility
- We submit the BUS grant application to Ofgem before any work begins
- Ofgem approves the application — timescales vary but are typically within a few working days
- We install your heat pump to MCS standards
- The grant is deducted from your invoice — you pay the remainder
Will the scheme run out before 2028?
Possibly. The BUS is funded until March 2028, but grants are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. There have been periods of high demand where applications have slowed. We recommend applying sooner rather than later to secure your funding.
Can landlords apply?
Yes — landlords can apply for the BUS grant for properties they own, as long as the property meets the eligibility criteria. The grant applies per property, not per person, so a landlord with multiple properties could potentially claim on each one.
Check if you qualify — free, no obligation
We handle the full BUS grant application for every heat pump we install. Book a free survey and we'll confirm your eligibility and walk you through the process.
